Creighton Prep Welcome - Praise, Reverence and Serve
Dear Creighton Prep community,
In the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola, Ignatius makes a clear and concise statement defining the purpose of human life: “Human beings are created to praise, reverence, and serve God and by means of this to save their souls.”
The excitement of the first day of school for the Creighton Prep community is a great occasion to call this purpose to mind. Praise, reverence and service should characterize not simply the purpose of our lives but the manner in which we live them.
We praise God in our daily prayers, from morning Mass to the morning prayer to the afternoon Examen. We also praise God by using the gifts and talents that God has entrusted to us to their fullest extent. When our incredible students discover and cultivate the fullness of their God-given gifts and abilities, they glorify God who gave them those gifts. When our incredible faculty and staff use their own gifts and talents to help our students become the best versions of themselves, God is glorified. When our alumni use their gifts and talents to make our city, our country and the world a better place, they praise God.
We reverence God in sacred spaces on our campus, in the sacred spaces that lie in the depths of our hearts, and in the amazing world around us that God has created. Above all, we reverence God who is present in the people around us. Our call to welcome, honor, treasure and include every single person who walks through our doors is rooted in the Gospel call that Christ is in every person around us.
We serve God in countless ways in our vocation as students, educators, alumni, and friends of Prep. Some of these acts of service look like the corporal and spiritual works of mercy that we usually think of when we think of service, things like feeding the hungry, visiting the sick, burying the dead and comforting the sorrowful. Some of them are the quieter deeds of service, the acts that lie hidden and remind us all of God’s nearness and care for all of humanity.
Welcome to a new school year at Creighton Prep. Let’s remember that God is present to us every step of the way. Let’s praise, reverence, and serve God in everything we do.
In Christ’s mission,
Fr. Matthew C. Spotts SJ
President
